Database functionality

When logging on to the database you can explore and use the database in several ways. The different functions are documented in more detail inside the database. Here is a brief overview:

Views

Views are used to display the data content in different ways. The wood association views display how the species are associated to different wood attributes. The species association and functional role views show how different species are associated to each other and their functional role in these interactions.

You can narrow the selection of species to be displayed by combining one or more of these search criteria: higher taxonomy position, obligate/facultative dependency on woody material, national status (i.e. whether the species is known from a particular country), geographical origin of the data, individual genus or species.

The views are not (yet) constructed to download information to your own computer. One should use the template reports for downloading.

Report templates

Report templates specify different selections of species and attributes to be displayed for smaller or larger subsets of the database. The report results can be downloaded as standard Excel- or pdf-files. The report templates operate on the current database content and the result from one template may change from one day to the next if the database is updated in the mean time.

Downloading information

Report templates are the standard tools to download information from the database. New templates can be designed by modifying existing ones or creating new templates from scratch.

It is not yet possible to download the results from views (which would be neat). This possibility may appear in the future, perhaps already later in 2007. It is, however, possible to copy the content directly from any view and paste it into a file on your own computer.

Upload new information

It is not (yet) possible to upload new information to the database through the Internet interface. This functionality will become available later in 2007.

Edit information content

This functionality is planned to be available by 1st September 2007.
